(Gray, Asa) (1810-1888), американский ботаник. Родился 18 ноября 1810 в Парисе (шт. Нью-Йорк). Окончил медицинскую школу в Фэрфилде (1830) (шт. Коннектикут). Непродолжительное время занимался медицинской практикой, однако вскоре увлекся ботаникой и поступил ассистентом к доктору Дж.Торрею в Нью-Йорке, автору известного учебника ботаники. В 1836 подписал контракт с Американской исследовательской экспедицией. Спустя два года занял должность преподавателя ботаники Мичиганского университета. В 1838 отправился в Европу, чтобы закупить книги для этого нового учреждения. Осмотрел многие ботанические сады и коллекции, в Лондоне познакомился с Р.Броуном, Ч.Дарвином и другими учеными.
